This is pretty much perfect…
This is pretty much perfect…
I’m posting the song, not the video, because the music video chopped off most of the beginning.
This is probably my favorite song from 1991’s best album Bandwagonesque. Nirvana and Pearl Jam only wish they were this good…
And today I present Scratching Post! Great band. Way back when (like, say, 13 or so years ago) I briefly corresponded through email with Nicole Hughes. She was a really cool person. Sadly the band never got signed Stateside and stayed a Canadian sensation. Scratching Post was especially a breath of fresh air considering that they were around the same time as the Riot Grrls. It was refreshing to hear a strong woman express her in a way that didn’t make her sound like a perpetually aggrieved agony aunt. Anyway, here’s Rock Past It:
Song #6a and $#6b for Canada Week. While America suffered through a dozen Nirvana clones, Canada had a slew of great power pop bands. Sure, we had them Stateside, but try getting played here in that era. Hell, try getting played here now.
I had a subscription to MuchMusic through DirecTV back in the day (96 or so) and these two songs were favorites of mine. They were released Stateside and sold about a dozen copies each. Without me they’d had only sold 11.
Tomorrow I’ll post the final band in Canada week. Though I’m sure over time I’ll post more Canadian indie bands.
What would a week of Canadian bands be without Rush? Yeah, it’s a stereotype, but hell, I love these guys.
It’s (unofficially) Canadian week for the Song of the Day series. I didn’t really mean for this to happen, but it did. So, here is #4 in the series. Metric’s “Front Row.” Some of the “indie than thou” types hated the last Metric album, but I loved it far better than the first two.
And Broken Social Scene also released a new one yesterday. I’m reserving judgement… yeah.
This is the final song on the 2005 self-titled album and still their greatest moment.
Well, The New Pornographers have a new album out today called Together. Much like Challengers it has a lot of mid-tempo and slow numbers. I will reserve judgement until I listen a few more times, but here is a good one from Mass Romantic. I far prefer the upbeat, louder songs to the slow ones…
One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard
I’m getting back on the posting wagon, y’all! I was going to attempt to do about 18 backdated posts, but that would be too much work. And kind of lame.
I was trying to find the original video for this, but this live performance might even be better.
It’s been a while since I’ve done this. To get the thumbnails and all, I have to go into WordPress, and that’s kind of a pain. But I care because you do!
And the eye candy of the day is from Hayley Williams, singer of Paramore. She’s got a great voice and is a beautiful young woman, but often times she makes goofy faces when anybody takes her picture. But thankfully I was able to find a few pictures where this isn’t the case:
It’s somewhat difficult to post Windy & Carl on a Song of the Day installation. Most of their best songs last more than 10 minutes, which is more than what YouTube allows for a single post. But here is a song that barely squeaks under the limit. Also, it’s one of my favorite songs by them.
People who want verse-chorus-verse pop songs will be disappointed, but Windy & Carl are more about mood than anything else. It’s great music to have on when writing, or reading, or when you want to relax. Much like Brian Eno’s best compositions, it’s best to let the music wash over you.
Forgive the fan made video. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just… bright.
Sadly the official music video has “embedding disabled by request.” EMI, in their infinite knowledge, is still being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. When will they learn that YouTube increases sales? And if you allow YouTube to host it at all, why not let bloggers embed their songs?
I’m anxiously awaiting the second Katy Perry album. The first album still sounds fresh to me, and for mainstream pop circa now, she’s really excellent. MUCH better than Lady friggen Gaga. And anybody who has seen her MTV Unplugged performance knows she can actually play guitar. I’m sure there’s one other thing (actually, two other things) I’m leaving out, but I’ll be good for today.
