With the glut of bad modern day “R&B” singers, it’s always nice to find the real thing.
Stephen Malkmus was kind of an Allen Ginsberg for the 90s. Ginzy minus the gross gay sex poems and annoying Vietnam references. But like Ginzy he came up with a lot of great lines that knock you over. “In The City We Forgot To Name” might be the name of the upcoming Las Almejas novel I’m brainstorming. Though I’m still kind of partial to “Electricity and Lust” from Trigger Cut. But I know one thing is for sure, I will NOT call it “Electricity and lust in the city we forgot to name.” 😉
In many ways it’s still amazing Sonic Youth even got signed to a major label. Putting aside anything that might have been said about such a subject in recent days, SY made some of their best music for the big wigs at The David Geffen Company. Saucer-Like is one of my favorites, both because of the music and the lyrics:
When I heard this band’s name, I didn’t want to like them. Small Black? Really? Why not Giant Black or Just Right Black? But I heard this song and fell in love with it. Even if they ripped off their name from the greatest band evah, I can forgive them when they make beautiful music like this:
This song (and video) makes me wonder if somebody spiked my drink, but in a good way.
I love Eno’s ambient stuff, but often overlook the rock stuff he did back in the 70s. If Discreet Music is what I listen to to decompress after a long day, this is what I listen to get me in the mood to write something weird. Or celebrate the weekend.
As odd as the music and lyrics are, it still has an almost childlike quality to it. If your kids happen to be Burroughs-reading, cross-dressing, glam rockers, that is.
A New Wave classic by Oingo Boingo with a great music video made of Azumanga Daioh clips. It’s hilarious in a horribly wrong way, but most of Mr. Kimura’s interactions with his students would get him arrested IRL, so… yeah…
Setting aside the fact the song is about jailbait (or an old guy dating a 20-something girl), the song is pretty universal
They don’t ask questions
They don’t want to scold me
They don’t look for answers
They just want to hold me
Isn’t that what we all want?
Of course, if you avoid women’s studies students, you can probably avoid a chick that scolds you.
Dino Jr’s cover of the Flying Burrito Brothers classic.
